1) There was a live mouse in a bell-shaped container on top of a blazing candle.
2) The mouse consumed all of the oxygen in the air when it was placed under the bell jar with the candle. As a result of the lack of oxygen in the air, the candle eventually went out. Due to a lack of oxygen, the mouse also dies over some time.
3) A mint plant, a live mouse, and a burning candle were then placed in the bell jar.
4) The plant uses carbon dioxide to help recycle oxygen in the air. This results in the replenishment of oxygen in the air that has been lost due to mouse respiration and candle burning.
