Herbivores, like deer and hare, feed on plants. Carnivores, like lions andwolves, eat meat. Omnivores, which include pigs, bears, and humans, eat both plants and animals. In an ecosystem, all the organisms that depend on one another in order to eat form a food chain.

Food chain refers to the sequence of events in an ecosystem, where one organism eats another and then is eaten by another organism, and the top predator finally gets decomposed.
For example:
Grass-Insects-Frog-Snake-Hawk-Bacteria&Fungi.
In this case, grass is consumed by small insects which are prey of frogs or the smaller insect eating reptiles. Again, snakes are the predators of frog who consume them and are consumed by larger birds and animals like hawks, mongoose and eagles. And finally when the top predators die, they are decomposed by fungi and bacteria(among which most common is Detritus) which actually means that they return the remains to the soil which increases the soil fertility.
