Answer:
Cats, also called domestic cats (Felis catus), are small, carnivorous (meat-eating) mammals, of the family Felidae. Domestic cats are often called 'house cats' when kept as indoor pets. Cats have been domesticated (tamed) for nearly 10,000 years. They are one of the most popular pets in the world.Important clues such as the look in your cat's eyes, the tone of their "voice," the position of their ears and even the motion of their tail can reveal their feelings and intentions. You can learn to read these signals so you'll get a good idea of what's on your cat's mind.Patterns of behavior are the key to spotting if your cat is uncomfortable about something. These can include, but aren't limited to, excessive scratching, over-grooming, face rubbing, increased aggression or unwillingness to play.

I agree with how the answers have characterized cats, but would add a few observations that may get some down votes.
Cats are mean! I say this because I've watched them when they catch a small insect, lizard, mouse, etc. Instead of dispatching it mercifully, they enjoy tormenting their catch. Of course, this is judging them by human standards. They probably don't see it that way.
Cats are fierce! They are well equipped with sharp claws, teeth, reflexes and instincts of a hunter. I would not want to run into a house cat if they weighed 50 pounds.
Cats can be emotionally needy. They pout. I say this because I originally thought they handled being left alone better than dogs. But my wife and I find that if we leave our cats for more than a couple of days, they are emotionally distressed and need to make us grovel a bit to get back in their good graces. Of course, this applies to indoor cats. Outdoor cats might not have quite the bond.
Cats are playful. They will chase the red dot of a laser pointer forever, or shadows of your hands on the wall.
Cats are interesting. You're never quite sure what is going on behind those eyes.
Every cat is different. Some feel the need to be the alpha. Some are content to mind their own business. Some are affectionate and some are very stand offish. Most want it their way and when they want it.
Cats are masters (dogs are servants) with respect to their people. Their is some truth to this.
I like cats, so even the MEAN characteristic does not bother me.
