Extrinsic Blood Clotting

  • Extrinsic pathway of clotting is a part of the coagulation cascade process during hemostasis.
  • Extrinsic pathway or tissue factor pathway is the clotting process activated by a protein tissue factor, the tissue thromboplastin, which is extrinsic to the blood.

Explanation:

Major steps of extrinsic pathway :

  1. A traumatic injury to tissues surrounding a blood vessel
  2. The extravascular cells, extrinsic to the bloodstream, upon a traumatic injury, releases factor III or thromboplastin.
  3. This is then converted to factor VII, which in combination with factor III forms an enzyme complex.
  4. Enzyme complex activates factor X
  5. Factor X initiates the common pathway
