How do I properly use sign conventions in kinematics problems?

Aspire to build a career in design & strategy?

Gravity acts downwards.

choose any direction to be positive (arbitrarily).

If you choose downward, then the sign in front of g is plus. If upward, then the sign in front of g is minus. Velocity and acceleration also follows it.

If downward direction defined as positive and the object is initially thrown up, then

initial velocity will be negative

acceleration (due to gravity) will be positive g

If downward direction defined as positive and the object is initially thrown up, then

initial velocity will be positive

acceleration (due to gravity) will be negative g

for the given example lets take down +ve then for first body

u=0 a= +g s=100

and for second one v=0 s=100 a= -g now

now solve the two

Answer:

Explanation:

Hi my dear friend I have drawn horizontally

But it's the same for vertical motion ( from height ) also
