For 50% of the country who depend on agriculture, the timing of the Covid-19 pandemic could not have been worse. For far too long, the majority of the country’s farmers have been struggling with anaemic incomes and increasing indebtedness – a shocking 82% of farmers have higher expenses than incomes according to NSS 2014. Many reasons for this rural distress have been documented elsewhere (unviable farm sizes, broken procurement and market linkages, sub-optimal crop choice, antiquated farm practices among others). Now add to this, a pandemic that disrupts activities across the board in an unprecedented manner.
