Small structures in a substance was first discovered by Robert Hooke by his self made microscope. he named it cell, a latin word for room for his monk brothers. Later when Leuwenhook's Microscope he discovered free cells in water, from there he knew what is a cell. The Schleiden and Schwann gave the cell theory and Pirkinge found the protoplasm. Virchow extended the cell theory. Finally in 1940, after Electron microscope was discovered, cell organelles were studied.
