Answer:

I needed some help on these two questions because I seem to get confused on how to assign the principal quantum number to certain electrons, especially when the element is located in the d block of the periodic table. Could someone pls explain this to me and how to specifically do 21 a and c and all of 27. Thanks!

the problems are

2.21 What are the principal and orbital angular momentum quantum numbers for each of the following orbitals: (a) 6p; (b) 3d; (c) 2p; (d) 5f?

2.27 Write the subshell notation (3d, for instance) and the number of orbitals having the following quantum numbers: (a) n = 5, l = 2; (b) n = 1, l= 0; (c) n = 6, l = 3; (d) n = 2, l =1.

Explanation:

As an example of 3d

this is another way of writing (n)(l)

since n = 3 and l = 2 = d

for all angular momentum quantum numbers we have

l=0; s

l=1; p

l=2; d

l=3; f

l=4; g

for the first question (a) 6p; (b) 3d; (c) 2p; (d) 5f

(a) n =6 and l = 1

(b) n = 3 and l = 2

(c) n = 2 and l = 1

(d) n = 5 and l = 3

For part two we work in reverse (a) n = 5, l = 2; (b) n = 1, l= 0; (c) n = 6, l = 3; (d) n = 2, l =1.

(a) 6d

(b) 1s

(c) 6f

(d) 2p
