Constitution is the fundamental law of any country. It is Constitution, which defines the governance of any country, and the rights and duties of its citizens. At present all the sovereign nations in the world have their own Constitution.
As said earlier the Constitution is needed to provide guidance to the governance of the country and it also guarantees the rights of the citizens and other persons. I can more specifically answer the second question by giving an example of Indian Constitution which has 448 Articles in 25 Parts, 12 Schedules, 5 Appendices and 101 Amendments till date.
Each Part of the Indian Constitution has a unique feature and the Articles contained in such part is prescribing for various eventualities, for instance, Part I defines India and her territories and issues incidental to it, Part II provides for the law concerning citizens of India and issue incidental to it, Part III provides for fundamental rights guaranteed to citizen of India and in certain cases even to a non citizen as well, similarly Part IV provides for Directive Principles and Part IV A Fundamental Duties and so on and so forth.
The Constitution also has extensive provisions related to the Union Executive (President and Prime Minister, Union Ministers and Attorney General), the Parliament and its composition, role and functions, the Constitution also has provisions for various aspects of functioning of the Supreme Court. Similarly, the Constitution has provided for the State Executive, the State Legislature and State Judiciary.
The Constitution has laws concerning the Federal Relation between the Union and the States. The Constitution also provides for certain bodies like the Election Commission, the Union/ State Public Service Commissions, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, various other Commissions e g SC/ST Commission etc.
The Constitution defines how the trade and relation between the States would be carried out inter se .
The Constitution provides for certain exclusive powers of the President of India to declare Emergency on happening of certain events.
The aforesaid is an extremely brief description of the Constitution of India, I hope, now you can understand the importance of the Constitution in a minute to minute functioning of our country.
