‘All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.’ Animal Farm George Orwell.

For those who benefit from inequality equality is not important at all.

In democracies, whilst some politicians clearly believe in equality others must pretend they do. When the true goal is power and status hypocrisy is a price many are willing to pay.

So back to answering the question.

Equality is important if you want to maximise the expression and use of everyone’s intelligence and creativity.

How do we know?

When lower caste Indians sit exams in rooms that make no distinction between high and low caste, their results are better than average – that is, better than high caste students. But if low caste students are reminded of their caste before they go into examination rooms they do worse.

These types of studies have been replicated many times in many different settings. Jane Elliott’s blue eyes / brown eyes experiments is a celebrated example. One day the brown eyed children are favoured. They thrive whilst the blue eyed students lose motivation. The next day the tables are reversed. When the blue eyed students are favoured the brown eyed students lose motivation.
