There are several bases for classifying drainage systems of India. They are briefly described below:

1. Size of the Catchment Area: Indian rivers are divided into the following three categories depending upon the size of their catchment area.

(i) Major river basins with catchment area of 20,000 sq km and above.

(ii) Medium river basins with a catchment area between 2,000 sq km and 20,000 sq km .

(iii) Minor river basins with a catchment area below 2,000 sq km .

2. Origin :  The drainage systems of India are also  classified  as per their origin  (a) The Himalayan rivers and (b) The Peninsular rivers

3. Orientation to the Sea: The Indian drainage is also divided on the basis of orientation to the sea. These include: (i) the Bay of Bengal drainage and (ii) Arabian sea drainage.
