Answer:
Rhythm is all around us. When the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening it creates a rhythmic pattern in our lives. Our heart beats a rhythm, albeit irregular - and perhaps faster when we are scared or in love. But in music influenced by Western Civilization, it is typically expected to be a steady beat and only slowed down or sped up when trying to perhaps show a certain emotional effect. In music, rhythm is simply defined as the “beat” or pulse of music. Certain rhythms have cultural value in music from certain regions around the world and can signify a particular dance or be used in communicating a message. In many cultures rhythm is also improvised whereas some are to be played exactly as written by the composer. Some styles of music and music from different regions in the world are also highly syncopated. Syncopation simply means accenting certain beats (typically the off or in-between beats) to make the music more exciting. Lastly, rhythm is one of the 3 Elements of Music (the others being harmony and melody) or as I like to call them, the 3 main ingredients that go into a song.
