Meteoroids are bits of solid matter floating in space. They are of all sizes and shapes, and can be made of several kinds of materials. The ones in this part of the solar system are in some kind of orbit around the sun.

Meteors are such bits of matter that have intersected the atmosphere of the earth. As they travel through the atmosphere, friction with air molecules heats them to incandescence. They fall, glowing brightly and burning as their surface is heated first to liquid, then to vapor. Most of them burn completely up at this point.

Meteorites are the remains of a meteor that has survived its journey through the atmosphere and hit the surface of the earth. Very few meteors make it, but over the billions of years the earth has existed, the numbers have mounted up. Small meteorites can be found almost everywhere that you find rocks and soil, if you know what to look for. Big meteorites usually get blasted apart when they collide with the earth and create a crater, like the one in Arizona. Again, over the billions of years of earth’s existence, there have been many, many meteor craters, but the evidence of them has been destroyed by the weathering of the earth’s crust. Also, since the surface of the earth is mostly water, the vast majority of them hit the oceans and sink.

Meteor: a Meteor is an asteroid or any other debris in space which gets burnt on entering the earths atmosphere.

It is seen as a shooting star as it glows.

Meteorite: the part of the Meteor which reaches the surface of the earth is called Meteorite.

It does not glow.
