Public Places

Public Places have always intrigued me. They are a microcosm of the macrocosm of society and societal life.

Places like railway stations and bus stops are a potpourri of activities. So many kinds of people can be seen amidst the hustle bustle in these places.

My favourite pastime is to sit quietly on a bench and observe life at a railway station or a bus stop. I love to watch the people boarding on and off their chosen conveyances, their facial expressions, their gait.

I love to watch the display boards frequently changing and announcing new information. I love to see the vendors sell such a plethora of items. They remind me of the bangle sellers in Sarojini Naidu's poem 'The Bangle Sellers'.

But there are certain things at these places that really affect me. Like the 'Two gentlemen of Verona' there are small boys and girls working continuously. Instead of going to school and enjoying the fun and frolic of childhood they work hard to make a living.

The lack of cleanliness is also something I don't like. I bear no complaint against the Authority as they try their best to maintain cleanliness in these places but it us , the people who make our public places so dirty.

All in all I love these Public places with a difference.

What I like at the railway station:

1. The ticket seller because her job is interesting i.e., collecting money and giving away tickets.

2. Flags because they teach punctuality.

3. The sound of trains.

4. The display boards which cause excitement to know about our train information.

What I don’t like at the railway station:

1. Children begging or selling things or polishing boots.

2. Seating scarcity

3. Unsafe drinking water.

4. Cleanliness in the toilets.
