Alkyl halides on reaction with ammonia yield primary, secondary and tertiary amines. A base is required (OH-) in the ammonolysis reaction to abstract proton from the ammonium salt and form amine.
When ammonia is in excess primary amine is the main yield. However when the alkyl halide is in excess tertiary amine is the main product.
