When dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium ribbon, the following reaction occurs:

2HCl (aq) + Mg (s) → MgCl₂ (aq) + H₂(g)

i.e. Hydrochloric Acid + Magnesium = Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen gas
