Today’s world is full of choices. In our highly advanced modern society our choices are complicated by new moral and ethical issues each day. Is it possible to lead a moral and ethical life in today’s society?
Ethics and morals are learned from the people we are raised by, not necessarily parents. Teachers, environment and almost everyone around a child leave an impression. Today in our morally chaotic world it is more important than ever for children to be taught morals. I believe that people are innately good and that it takes time and bad influences to make them bad. Jean-Paul Sartre believed in existentialism and it’s way of life, thinking in terms of choices. I believe that we must be held accountable for our own actions no matter what the repercussions. Jean-Paul Sartre believes every act we commit “has repercussions for the entire human race, for when we choose to act in response to our unique situation we create an image of man/woman that we desire to have universally accepted.”1 Literally this seems absurd; however, Sartre is trying to illustrate the old cliché “Do unto others as you would have done to you.” When someone chooses to murder their daughter then they send a message that it’s ok to murder your daughter because it did. Together our society has decided on what rules we should follow for the general well being of our society and also we have created consequences for those who decide to break these guidelines.
