“I Dream a World” James Mercer Langston Hughes, more commonly known as Langston Hughes, was a talented and prolific American writer in the twentieth century. He was born in Joplin, Missouri and raised by his grandmother after his father fled to Mexico. Growing up, Hughes’s grandmother told him stories, which inspired him to write poetry (O’Daniel). His poems mainly comment on racism and the injustices African Americans face. His popularity was mainly due to his involvement in the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s, which was a movement of emerging black writers (O’Daniel). A poem of his, “I Dream a World”, comments on the social ills of greed, hate, and racism by creating dreams of a better world with an abundance of love. The theme of the poem is “with love, there is no greed or wretchedness”. Similarly, a song titled “Where Is The Love?”, composed by the Black Eyed Peas, is a song about love, greed, and hate. Langston Hughes’s message in his poem “I Dream a World” is to spread love and create unity amongst everyone despite social or economic differences.
