                                         Nationality

       The terms nationality and country have been used interchangeably until recently. They are now used as two separate terms, but even those who differentiated between them did not agree on the distinction.

       This is evidently due to the reality that both country and nationality have to share the same 'domestic' adjectival shape and have the same root nature as the birth or race concept.

       But country has now definitely become political in meaning as a result of universal recognition of the concept of 'one country, one state.' It implies political unity, a body of individuals distinct from others with their own distinct and separate political identity.  

       But as a consequence of universal acceptance of the notion of ' one nation, one state, nation has now definitely become political in significance. It means political unity, a separate body of people with a distinct and separate political identity of their own.  

       James Bryce suggests that "a nationality is a population united by certain links, such as language and literature, thoughts, customs and traditions, in such a manner as to feel a consistent unity separate from other communities likewise united by their own connections." Whereas a country is a nationality "which has organized itself into either an autonomous political body or an autonomous political body."

        Nationality, therefore, shows a prevalent spiritual or psychological feeling among individuals with common affinities or a "socio-cultural complex," as Maclver puts it. Barnes claims nationality "is the collective name given to the complex of psychological and cultural variables that furnish a nation's cohesive principle."
