Hey I'm MrMysterious
» The modern world has witnessed a phenomenal development of demo-
cracy and democratic institutions. The Press is a very powerful institution of democracy. It wields such a strong influence in a democratic polity that it has been described as the Fourth Estate. It was responsible for removal from power such a powerful person as Richard Nixon from the presidentship of the U.S.A and installation back into saddle of a wronged Chief Minister of a state of India. The press greatly helped the democratic forces in Eastern Europe in throwing out the communist dictatorships in almost all the countries of that part of the world and the process started is tending to embrace in its fold the remaining pockets of autocratic rule in other parts of the world. Hardly any corner of the country remains invisible to its sharp eyes. That is why even the most powerful rulers can not afford to ignore its importance and power. It was instrumental in deposing Gen. Suharto from the President-ship of Indonesia and helped cut short the Presidentship of Abdur Rahman Wahid of the same country and put behind prison bars the indomitable, Estrada, the deposed President of Philippines. In January 2002, Prabhat Kumar, the then Governor of Jharkhand became a victim of its keen eyes and he was forced to resign the Governorship. In India the famous Jessica Lal murder, Tandoor case and, most recently (2007) the Nithari case came to be highlighted through the Press. Earlier the food for oil programme of Iraq in which some Indian persons were suspected to be involved was brought into light by the Press.

Press includes print media i.e. newspapers and magazines . Freedom of press denotes an atmosphere in which media-professionals like journalists, reporters, correspondents, editors and columnists can work and publishwhat is true and fact without fear or any threat. Freedom of press is an important precondition of a democratic and free society. In most countries of the world, freedom of press is guaranteed by the constitution.
As an important means of public media, newspaper holds and exerts immense influence on people. Freedom of press means newspapers can print news and views without being censored or barred by any authority. When press enjoys freedom, it indicates that the press can publish news and opinions on any issues without facing any restrictions and prohibitions. But it does not mean that this freedom is absolute and arbitrary. Newspaper cannot publish whatever they wish, rather they should publish things that are constructive for the society or the country and should refrain from publishing any propaganda or biased news and any thing that can harm society or the state. So press must realize the meaning of the scope of its freedom,
otherwise their power can turn into an instrument of great public harm and damage.
A free press plays the role of a watchdog in society or country. Their influence is great, so their role is also immense. And that is why freedom of press is also necessary in order to know what is right, what is true and fair. Only a free press can ensure people’s access to information and help to build a well-informed, transparent and accountable society. Press, for its part, as a conscientious body of the society, should not misuse its freedom
