We expand ourselves in the amount of knowledge that we have and the experience that we gain.

Physically we expand our city outskirts. We expand our town sizes. 

Universe is expanding. Due to increase in global temperatures, the air must be diluting and expanding more and more.

Physically we expand our capability to hold weights , jump higher or longer.  Those who do six pack training or weight training expand their chest size and lungs size. So their shoulders expand. You can see this clearly in the swimmers.
