Features of sclerenchyma are as follows:-

1. It provides mechanical support hence it is known as mechanical tissue.

2. Sclerenchyma is a dead tissue.

3. Term sclerenchyma was given by Mettenius.

4. Most of the cells in them are seen lignified, long, narrow & thick walled.

5. These cells become dead after maturity.

6. Due to the deposition of lignin many pits are found on the walls of sclerenchyma.

7. It is seen in monocot stems mostly in hypodermis.

• The sclerenchyma tissue has rectangular shaped cells. These cells are without a nucleus and cytoplasm.
• They show deposition of lignin in the walls resulting in uneven thickness.
• They are referred to as dead cells.
• Fibres and sclereids are the main types of sclerenchyma cell.
