The first newspaper published in India was a newspaper written in English from Kolkata (then Calcutta) India, "Hickey's Bengal Gazette". It was India's first major publication, published in 1780.

Explanation:

  • James Augustus Hicky published the first newspaper in India on 29 January 1780, entitled the Bengal Gazette. Often called ' Calcutta General Advertiser, ' people remember it simply as ' Hicky's Gazette.
  • It was a two-sheet  weekly newspaper that was very small. And the paper was filled with ads called The Calcutta General Advertiser. Actually, the front page was only full of ads.
  • Hicky's Gazette was priced in the 1780's at Re 1, costly, but at that time equivalent to English newspapers. It was printed weekly, four or five pages long-two or three of them with news, opinion, and two other ads. There was a 67, Radha Bazar, Calcutta printing press.
  • Hicky's Bengal Gazette or The Original Calcutta General Advertiser provided the underground voice to the newspaper and it became immediately sensational. So much so, Governor General Warren Hastings quickly tried to limit his fast-growing influence
