Explanation:

The Ramakrishna Mission is an embodiment of the synthesis of ancient Indian and modern western cultures. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836-86) was the founder of this socio-religious movement. He was a poor priest in a temple at Dakshineshwar near Calcutta. He had no formal education. He had faith in all religions and performed religious exercises in accordance with Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.

All the different religious views are different ways leading to the same goal – was the message of Ramakrishna. He (God) is both one and many. He has form and is also without it. This message is a great universal spirit as well as a constellation of symbols. Thus, catholicity was the essence of the Mission’s founder. He led a life of a secluded saint with broad catholicity, mysticism and spirituality.

Formally, the Mission was founded in May 1897 by Paramahamsa’s disciple, Narendranath Dutta, who was later on known as Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902). Vivekananda was a graduate of Calcutta University.
