launched by various State Governments. The first state to start this programme was Odisha in 1988.
The features of JFM are
(i) Under this programme, local communities are involved in the management and restoration of degraded forests.
(ii) The major purpose of the JFM is to protect the forests from encroachments, grazing, theft and fire and also to improve the forests in accordance with an approved Joint Forest Management Plan.
(iii) In return, the members of these communities are entitled to intermediary benefits like non-timber forest produces.

It is a type of conservation technique in which a village committee called forest protection committee and the forest department enter into an agreement.

1-The villagers themselves take up the task of protecting forests from overgrazing, illegal harvesting, deforestation and forest fires. They also try to protect forested land from soil erosion.

2-In doing so, the villagers get a share of the revenue obtained from the sale of the timber products. Thus gaining an impetus to save forested land.

3-The villagers are free to use and harvest non timber forest products sustainably, keeping in mind the rejenuvation time of the resources.

4-It is an efficient method of saving forested areas from deforestation and soil erosion, as the locals are well acquainted with their surroundings and know their way around.

5-The villagers and locals are mostly dependent of forests for their survival. Leaving the responsibility of sustainable use on them, greatly increases their independency and reduces uneccessary depletion.
