Lion is a great beast and surprisingly it is a kind of cat, large cat though.
Appearance:
The distinguishing feature of the lion is the golden mane around the face of male lions.
As the 'king of the jungle':
It is nicknamed as 'the king of the jungle' due to its majesty and superior physical strength. In many stories of children and folktales, lion is represented as the most superior of all animals in the jungle and thus also the king'of the entire jungle.
Characteristics:
It is extremely ferocious and aggressive while attacking its prey. Wild lions are carnivorous i.e. meat-eating animal. Generally, lions are found in savannas, grasslands, dense bush, and woodlands. The average lion's lifespan ranges from 10 to 14 years. However, some tigers can live for a greater period. The oldest lion possibly ever recorded was a 26-year-old lion in a Zoo in Sri Lanka, which is so very unusual.
In the face of possible extinction:
Nowadays, lions are in the danger of extinction in the near future and all steps, required to prevent such an event, ought to be taken. Hunting and captivity of lion are the most contributing factors to the decreasing number of lions. Other factors include habitat loss, diseases, and so on.
