A union territory is a type of administrative division in the Republic of India. Unlike states, which have their own elected governments, unionterritories are ruled directly by theUnion Government (central government), hence the name "unionterritory".

State is defined as the administrative units with their own elected government.

Union Territory implies the constituent units, that are controlled and administered by the Central Government.
