They had some more sophisticated military technology which rebels would not have been able to match. The taxes made sure that the people of India (to them savages) were 'civilized' by the Brits, in that they were answerable mostly to them as their petty servants. That allowed them to rule as eventual monarchs with no conscience whatsoever, slaughtering millions over the span of their tyrannical rule in India.
