Four steps for effective time management are:

1. Know how we spend our time

2. Prioritize how we want to spend our time

3. Create schedule

4. Stick to that schedule

1. Know how we spend our time

To plan our time, we first need to know how we are spending our time. Create a record of activities on a twenty to thirty-minute basis for at least a week. After we have done this for a week or two, we need to reflect on how we’re truly spending our time. Also, if we want to get detailed with it, there are many online tools that we can use to track how we spend our time.

2. Prioritize how we want to spend our time

After assessing how we now use our time, we must consider how we want to spend our time. We can use a prioritized to-do list. Once we identify the most important ways that we need to spend our time, we then need to create a schedule. Many people end the process at the prioritized to-do list, but how we will know if and when we can get it all done if we don’t find time for them?

3. Create schedule

For creating a schedule, first, assign the necessary time to each activity. We should be honest with ourselves and evaluate how much time it will take us to complete each task. Once we’ve assigned time to each activity, we’re ready to begin scheduling. It is helpful to use some scheduling apps, available online or we can carry on with pen-and-paper scheduling in a planner. While scheduling we must remember that we mustn’t over-schedule ourselves. Remember, that throughout our tightly scheduled day, we will need time to do things like eating healthy meals, sleeping, etc. There is nothing wrong with scheduling non-school or work-related activities. These are important things too and need to fit in somewhere.

4. Stick to that schedule

The final step to effective time management is sticking to our schedule. This is where self-discipline comes in. This can look like avoiding small distractions, or setting reminders on our phones to switch tasks to stay on schedule. It also requires avoiding procrastination.
