Introduce a burning candle/matchstick/splinter near the evolved gas. If it is hydrogen it burns with a pop sound and the flame kindles and burns.

Pass the hydrogen gas through Copper oxide. The colour of copper oxide changes from black to brown indicating that the hydrogen reduces the copper oxide back to copper.
