Erythrocytes are also known as RBCs (Red blood cells)
- They are most abundant of all the cells in blood.
- RBCs are formed in the red bone marrow in the adults.
- A healthy individual has on an average 5 to 5.5 million of RBCs mm³ of blood
- They have red coloured, iron containing complex protein called heomglobin.
- A healthy individual has 12-16ml if haemoglobin in every 100ml of blood.
- RBCs play a significant role in transport of respiratory gases.
- RBCs are devoid of nucleus and are biconcave in shape.
- RBCs have an average life span of 120 days after which they are destroyed in the spleen.
