Auroville’s Afforestation Campaign

• By its reforestation drive, Auroville initiated its conservation efforts in the early 1970's. With the support of grants from the Point Foundation & international investors, the first tree nurseries began . After that, people in Auroville started to plan  "large-scale tree planting" & over a million trees were planted under the land & water conservation project.
• The trees were primarily timber, fencing, ornamentals, fruit fodder trees, nut trees, etc. The micro-climate was established as the trees started to grow, and numerous species of birds and animals came back to the area. As a result, seeds dissemination and environmental enrichment has further taken place.

Scientific Monitoring

• in 1982 The Ministry of Environment, Government of India, pleased with the performance of its "afforestation scheme", provided Auroville 11 lakhs to plant trees and also scientifically tracked the results using suitable techniques . A new emphasis for green workers started in Auroville and it soon became clear that Auroville was very important to deliver an environment outside its borders

Work Outside Auroville's Boundaries

• Green employees in Auroville have travelled through different regions of India to exchange experience and to launch new forestation programmes.  Karnataka, Chenglepettu in Tamil Nadu and Palani Hills to the reforestations of Dindigul and Kodaikanal are regions they had visited.

Green Belt

• Around the future city centre, a major part of the afforested area is located in the green belt to shield Auroville from intrusion by the sprawling Pondicherry suburbs.
• The belt would serve as the barrier to urban intrusion as a zone for organic farms, orchards, dairies, forests, & wildlife regions, offering a range of wildlife resources and being used as a source for  wood, medicine, & food supply and a place for leisure.
• The Green Belt, is presently an area of 405 hectares and provides an example of a effective method of converting the wilderness into a dynamic ecological system. It is to be a remarkable location for the regeneration of soil and water, ground water recovery, and environmental preservation, with an additional 800 hectares expected.
• This green belt is sparsely populated and most of the forest keepers remain in the field. Every month, the Forest group conducts meetings and  exchange details and arrange for the distribution of funds to sustain and extend the afforestation work. The Forest group conducts meetings.
