SEISMIC ZONES OF INDIA

Shaking of the earth’s surface is called earthquake, consequently from a sudden energy release in the lithosphere of Earth causes the seismic waves. It is measured with the Seismometers. Richter Magnitude Scale is used to measure its magnitude and Mercalli scale is used to measure the intensity of shaking. India is divided into 4 seismic zones:

• Zone 2

• Zone 3

• Zone 4

• Zone 5

Zone 5

This zone suffers the highest risks with earthquakes of intensity MSK (Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik) IX or above. The zone factor of 0.36 is assigned by IS code. This factor is used by structural designers for earthquake resistant design. Rann of Kutch, Western and central Himalayas, Kashmir, North-East Indian region and North and Middle Bihar comprise this zone. In broad-spectrum, areas with basaltic rock or trap rock are liable to earthquakes.

Zone 4

This zone is also known as the High Damage Risk Zone, covering up the areas that are prone to MSK VIII. The zone factor of 0.24 is assigned by IS code. Delhi and Indo-Gangetic basin, Jammu and Kashmir, Patan area (Koyananager) and Maharashtra are included in this Zone. In Bihar state like- Raksaul in the northern part, near the India-Nepal border are also comprise this zone.

Zone 3

The zones that fall under this are Andaman and Nicobar Islands which are parts of Kashmir, Western Himalayas. This zone is categorized as Moderate Damage Risk Zone that is prone to MSK VII and in addition to 7.8. The zone factor of 0.16 is assigned by IS code.

Zone 2

The zone is prone to MSK VI or less and is categorized as Low Damage Risk Zone. The zone factor of 0.10 (maximum horizontal acceleration measured by a structure in zone 2 is 10% of gravitational acceleration) is assigned by IS code.
