Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is a the treatment of wastewater by certain processes. The processes involves physical, biological and chemical processes, which remove physical, biological and chemical matter that contaminates the wastewater.
1. Wastewater is passed through bar screens by which all the solid big impurities like cans, plastics, etc are separated.
2. The water then goes to a grit and sand removal tank. Here the speed of incoming water is reduced and sedimentation takes place to allow sand and grit to settle down.
3. The water is then allowed to settle in a large tank which is sloped towards the middle. Solids like faeces settle at the bottom called sludge and are removed with a scraper. The skimmer removes the floatable solids like the oil and grease. Watet so cleared is called the clarified water.
4. Air is pumped into this clarified water to support the growth of aerobic bacteria. They consume human and food waste still remaining in the clarified water.
5. After several hours, the suspended microbes settle at the bottom of the tank as activated sludge. The water is then removed from the tank.
6. The treated water has very low level of organic matter and suspended matter. It is discharged into a water body where nature cleans it up further. Sometimes this water is disinfected with chemicals like chlorine and ozone before releasing it.
This is called the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
