n astronomy and cosmology, distance is often represented using the units called "light-years". A light-year is the distance that light travels in one year, and since light travels at approximately 3x10^8 meters/second and there are approximately 3.15x10^7 seconds in one year, a light-year (distance is the velocity multiplied by the time) is just under 10^16 (10,000,000,000,000,000) meters, or about 10 trillion kilometers.
The distance from the Sun to Pluto, which is the dimension of our solar system, is about 5.4 light-hours and the distance to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is about 4.25 light-years. Our solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is a typical size galaxy and is about 100,000 light-years across. Andromeda, our nearest galaxial neighbor, is located about 2,140,000 light-years away and the distance to the farthest object we can see is about of 10-20 billion light-years.
Following is the chronology of events that resulted in the origination of Earth:
- Around 4.5 billion years ago, the matter that later formed Earth was exerted as solar nebula into the space.
- The consistent and continued exertion of the solar nebula for millions of years caused it to form thick clouds of heavy and light planetary materials.
- Accumulation of these clouds happened for another few million years and a spherical body like a giant raging fireball was formed.
- This body contained most of the elements that we naturally find on Earth today.
- Due to the gravitational force exerted by the nearby spatial bodies, this accumulated body started revolving around the sun in a specific orbit.
- The centripetal force acting upon this spherical body resulted in its partial solidification.
- During the process of solidification, moisture was released in the form of water vapors. These vapors raised to form heavy clouds thick enough to pour for millions of years.
- This process was followed by rains for another few million years which ultimately cooled down the burning spherical body. The emission of different gases from volcanoes and other intra-planetary processes caused the atmosphere to form.
