Answer:
Sericulture:
- The process of rearing silkworms to produce silk for commercial purposes is called sericulture.
- Silkworms are reared for sericulture.
- The most common silkworms used are Bombyx mori (domestic silk moth). Their eggs take about 14 days to hatch into larvae which feed on mulberry leaves. mature larvae wrap themselves in a cocoon by secreting saliva. It becomes silk when it comes in contact with air. The cocoon is spun in 2-3 days.
- The pupae inside the cocoon are killed by boiling the cocoon. The silk filaments are removed from the dead cocoon by a process called reeling. When the cocoons are placed in boiling water for 15 minutes, it enables the separation of individual filaments. They are twisted into a thread with the help of a series of guides and pulleys. This silk is then re-boiled in order to improve its luster. Over 900 meters of filament can be obtained from a single cocoon.
- Sericulture provides employment, economic development and improves the quality of life in rural areas. Sericulture is highly suitable to small and marginal farmers, because it generates a high income even with less investment.
Apiculture:
- Apiculture or beekeeping is the rearing of honey bees for the production of honey and wax.
- There are various species of honeybees used in apiculture. Some of them are Apis dorsata (Rock bee), Apis indica (Indian bee), Apis florae (Little bee), Apis mellifera (Italian bee).
- The bees are bred commercially in apiaries. The bees are taken care of and managed to produce wax and honey. The products are used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Honey has medicinal values and is also used as a food additive. The bees are divided into queen, drone and worker bees. The queen bee lays thousands of eggs, the worker bee collects nectar and the drone bee fertilizes the eggs laid by the queen bee. The worker bees are mainly responsible for the production of honey.
- Apiculture is economically important because honey and beeswax are produced, which are used for commercial purposes. Honey bees also help in pollination and increase the yield of crops.
