write in your information oven language the use and information of neutralization reaction in daily life
Answers
the reaction in which acid or base neutralizes called neutralization reaction
Answer:
1 Neutralisation in Agriculture
(a) To treat acidic soil
(i) Plants cannot grow well in acidic soil.
(ii) Lime fertilisers such as powdered lime, CaO, limestone, CaCO 3 or ashes of burnt wood are added to the soil to neutralise it acidity.
(b) To treat basic soil
(i) Basic soil can be treated by using a compost of rotting vegetables or leaves.
(ii) This is beacause the rotting vegetables and leaves decompose to liberate carbon dioxide gas.
(iii) The acidic gas from the decomposition of compost neutralises the alkalis in basic soils.
2 Neutralisation in Industries
(a) To treat acidic effluents
(i) Effluents from the electroplating industry contain acids such as sulphuric acid.
(ii) It is treated by adding lime to neutralise it before it is discharged into rivers and streams.
(b) To treat acidic gas
(i) In energy industry, power stations burn fossil fuels such as coal to produce electricity.
(ii) The burning fossil feuls will liberate sulphur dioxide gas as an acidic pollutant in the air.
(iii) Hence, power stations treat this acidic gas using powdered lime, CaO or limestone, CaCO3to neutralise it so that air pollutant can be prevented.
(c) To prevent coagulation of latex
(i) In the rubber industry, ammonia solution, NH4OH, is used to prevent the coagulation of latex because ammonia solution, NH4OH, can neutralise the acid (lactic acid) produced by bacteria in the latex.
3 Neutralisation in Health
(a) To treat gastric patients
(i) Anti-acids are medicines containing bases such as aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3 and magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2 to neutralise the excess acid in the stomach.
(b) To treat wasp stings
(i) Wasp stings are alkaline in nature.
(ii) Vinegar is used to cure wasp stings because vinegar can neutralise the stings.
(c) To treat bee stings
(i) Bee stings and ant bites are acidic in nature.
(ii) They can be neutralises using alkaline medicine such as baking powder.
4 Neutralisation at Home
(a) To prevent tooth decay
(i) Decaying food particles in our teeth produces acid and cause tooth decay.
(ii) Using toothpaste during brushing help to neutralise the acid and preventing tooth decay since toothpaste is an alkaline.
(b) Baking Powder
(i) Baking powder helps cakes to rise
(ii) It contains sodium hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate of soda) and a weak acid.
(iii) When the water is added, both water and the sodium hydrogen react.
(iv) The reaction is like an acid acting on a carbonate.
(v) This gives out carbon dioxide, which raises the cake.
(c) Shampoo
(i) Shampoos are mild alkaline which causes small scales on each hair which make you hair unmanageable.
(ii) To solve the problem you used hair conditioner.
(iii) Hair conditioners are mild acid.
(iv) When used, the acidity in the hair conditioner will neutralise the alkali and cause the scales to close
