Gastric glands in the wall of stomach secrete hydrochloric acid, enzyme pepsin and mucus . Mucus protects the inner lining of stomach from the infection of hydrochloric acid (HCL) and pepsin. If mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands then HCL and pepsin will cause erosion to the inner lining of stomach , thereby leading to acidity and ulcer.
