The societies that grew up in Bengal at the beginning of the twentieth century were the Anushilan Samiti, Dhaka Anushilan Samiti, and Jugantor which is also called the Manicktala Secret Society.

Anushilan Samiti - The Anushilan samiti was formed on 24th March, 1902 and it was the first secret society of Bengal. The main objective of the Samiti in those days were "Free our motherland from outsiders". Few reformers like Jatindranath Bandhopadhyay influenced the youth of Bengal to come forward and join the Samiti.

Dhaka Anushilan Samiti - Just after three years of the formation of the Anushilan Samiti, the Dhaka Anushilan Samiti was formed that is in the year 1905. It was mainly a branch of the Anushilan Samiti that was set up in Dhaka. Pramathanath Mitra went over to Dhaka in 1905 with the objective of setting up a part of Dhaka Anushilan Samiti there. Pramathanath Mitra was the director of the Anushilan Samiti in Calcutta.

Jugantor (Manicktala Secret Society) - The Jugantor cannot be said as an active society it was more of a revolutionary group where Barindra Kumar Ghosh was an active member. Jugantor was a newspaper and the name was used for those who still worked for the paper. The members of Jugantor was involved in a Bomb case and was arrested at the Manicktala Garden house.
