The correct order of ionic character is CCl4 < SiCl4 < GeCl4 < SnCl4 < PbCl4.

  • The ionic and covalent character is given by Fajan's rule.
  • Covalent character is directly proportional to the size of the anion and inversely proportional to the size of the cation. It is also directly proportional to the oxidation state.
  • The oxidation state and anion are the same in all so, we will check the size of the cation.
  • Down the group size increases so, covalent character decreases.
  • Covalent character is inversely proportional to the ionic character. so, the ionic character increases down the group.
