A narrow shaft bored in the ground either vertically or horizontally is termed as a borewell.

The borewell are constructed for- extraction of water other liquids or gases.

But due to the irresponsibility of the concerned authorities, these borewells are left open.

As a result, there were mishaps and the children fell into it and were trapped there for hours without food and oxygen.

Many of them had to meet the death.

Borewells are usually 4.5 inches to 12 inches in diameter, drilled into earth through soil and rock strata for getting water. PVC pipes of high grade are used as casing in these wells and their depths range from 100 to 1600 feet.

Because borewells are deep and narrow, there is always the danger of small babies and animals falling into them and getting trapped. Rescuers find it difficult to retrieve such hapless victims.

To prevent such accidents, borewells should always be well protected with caps and fencing.
