Plaster of paris, quick-setting gypsum plaster consisting of a fine white powder (calcium sulfate hemihydrate), which hardens when moistened and allowed to dry. Known since ancient times, plaster of paris is so called because of its preparation from the abundant gypsum found near Paris.

Two properties of plaster of paris :-

• non-flammable
• non-combustible

Uses of plaster of paris:-

Used in making casts and patterns for molds and statues. Used as the cement in ornamental casting and for making decorative materials. Used as a fireproofing material and for making chalks. Used in hospitals for immobilizing the affected part in case of bone fracture or sprain. Used to fill small gaps on walls & roofs.
