The IUPAC name of the element having atomic number 104 is Rutherfordium (Rf).
- Initially, elements with atomic numbers more than 100 are given common names.
- These common names are derived by the name of each number appearing in the atomic mass.
- hence an element with atomic number 104 has the common name Unnilquadium.
- The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research located in present-day Russia named the element 104 kurchatovium (Ku) after the father of the Soviet atomic bomb Igor Kurchatov.
- At the same time, the University of California, US, named it rutherfordium after Ernest Rutherford.
- In 1997, rutherfordium was accepted as the IUPAC name of element 104.
