  • These common names are derived by the name of each number appearing in the atomic mass.
  • hence an element with atomic number 104 has the common name Unnilquadium.
  • The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research located in present-day Russia named the element 104 kurchatovium (Ku) after the father of the Soviet atomic bomb Igor Kurchatov.
  • At the same time, the University of California, US, named it rutherfordium after Ernest Rutherford.
  • In 1997, rutherfordium was accepted as the IUPAC name of element 104.
