Sir — There is a ban on the sale of gutkha, pan masala and other tobacco products in some states. This has indirectly proved to be a golden opportunity for the sellers of such products, who are now selling them on black and earning fast bucks. The ban on the sale alone has no meaning when the manufacture of these products is going on unabated under the nose of the government. The manufacturers are paying statutory taxes and duties. How does the policy of banning make sense in this situation? Will the government take a serious step towards curbing the tobacco industry, especially when cigarettes have proved to be a serious health hazard and gutkha pouches cause environmental pollution?
