Subject: Frequency of strikes

Sir ,

In our country, democracy seems to mean the right to do anything, any way and at any place one wants to! Political parties call bandhs at the drop of a hat. Passengers get stranded at airports and railway stations, patients die, important examinations in schools and colleges are postponed, daily wage earners sigh in frustration, and the entire country is held to ransom. It only goes to show how little the political parties actually care for the general public, in whose very name these bandhs are often called!

They say a gentleman is a person who respects others’ feelings. By that yardstick, we don’t seem to have too many gentlemen in our political parties. I am afraid this does not augur well for the future of our nation.

The courts of law have tried to intervene in this matter and failed. I think it is time for the common citizenry to unitedly take a stand against this callous violation of its human rights to make political parties realise that, to attain what one perceives to be one’s rights; one has no business to blatantly trample upon the rights of others.

Yours faithfully,

S Ponnuswami
