Dear ( ),
With more than 54% of workforce still dependent on agriculture for their livlihood, agriculture in India has a far-reaching impact on poverty reduction as well as rural development. Thus, it would be more meaningful to view agriculture not as farming alone but as a wholistic value change which includes farming, wholesaling, warehousing, processing and retailing. Also the fact that an average indian spends more than 50% of his monthly expenditure on food establishes the centrality of agriculture in the context of food security concerns.
There are numerous problems faced by the farmers in India and they are:
Ownership of land:-
Farmers holding 1 acre of land are marginal farmers
Farmers holding 2 acre of land are small farmers
Farmers holding 2–10 acre of land are medium farmers.
Farmers holding more than 10 acres of land are large farmers.
Dependence on monsoon and lack of agriculture irrigational infrastructure. Both micro irrigation and macro irrigation is suffering at a great level. The irrigation sector still stands on ancient technique like - tube well, well, canal network etc.
Lack of post harvest management like - cold storages, warehouses, cold chains and agro processing industries.
Lack of marketing infrastructure like - credit giving infrastructure, supply chain management, agriculture extention infrastructure: seeds, chemicals, fertilizers.
There are low level of investment in agriculture because there are less return on investment (ROI) . Farmers choose to quit and indulge into any other profitable activities.
There are two major crops according to seasons Rabi crops (winter) and Kharif crops (summer). There are challenges like- Seasonal unemployment and Disguised unemployment ( cover crowding of workforce).
