Rayon, artificial textile material composed of regenerated and purified cellulose derived from plant sources. Developed in the late 19th century as a substitute for silk, rayon was the first man-made fibre.

Absorbent fibers such as cotton, rayon, and wood pulp, have been used for a long time in articles ranging from diapers to surgical sponges. The transport of water in these cellulosic fibers is accomplished mainly by capillarity without significant swelling of the fibers. Since the 1970s, superabsorbent fibers have been developed that absorb many times the amount of water taken up by the earlier cellulosic fibers.

Answer:

  • Rayon Fiber is comfortable, soft to the skin, and has the moderate dry strength and abrasion resistance. One of the Rayon Fiber's strengths is its versatility and ability to blend easily with many fibers—sometimes to reduce cost, other times for luster, softness, or absorbency and resulting comfort.
