The author is writing about how water looks different in different situations or conditions; however, water is actually transparent. So the water is actually just showing you what is there while also playing around with the light. water can both reflect and refract light, and depending on if the surface of the water is straight, concave, or convex, it will treat the light differently. So you can have an infinite number of things to say about how water looks, depending on the situation. It is dark and murky when it is on top of mud, and the light is low. It is green when there is algae present, and it is showing off a rainbow when light is refracted by it. So water is a lovely thing because it has an infinite number of things that can be said about it. It is perfect
The water sets the tone of the scene. But, the funny thing is that water is transparent! Kind of cool!
