In equation form, the first law of thermodynamics is ΔU = Q − W. Here ΔU is the change in internal energy U of the system. Q is the net heat transferred into the system—that is, Q is the sum of all heat transfer into and out of the system.
a) For a closed system, one may write the first law of thermodynamics as : ΔU = Q – W, where ΔU denotes the change of the system's internal energy, Q the quantity of energy added to it as heat, and W the work done by the system on its surroundings.
b) By first law of thermodynamics,
ΔU = QP + W. In this process, the heat absorbed QP is used to increase the internal energy (ΔU) of the system.
