'Takht' which literally means a throne or seat of authority is a result of historical growth of Sikhism. There are 5 takhts. Two of the five Takht are located outside Punjab and are Takht Sri Patna Sahib, Patna in Bihar, and Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib at Banded in Maharashtra. The other three Takhts are in Punjab - Akal Takht in Amritsar, Sri Keshgarh Sahib in Anandpur and Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo Bhatinda District.

At present Sikhs recognise five places as takhts. Three are in Punjab —Akal Takht (Amritsar); Takht Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib); Takht Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo) — and the other two are Takht Patna Sahib (Bihar) and Takht Hazur Sahib (Nanded, Maharashtra).
